PS. This tagged pointer technique is actually a universal pattern across systems programming. It solves two problems: First, in dynamically typed contexts, the execution engine must know a value's type before operating on it. Second, placing this metadata in an extra struct field wastes memory and causes cache-misses from pointer chasing.
